On Thursday, Bengaluru topped the government’s 111-city “Ease of Living Ranking,” preceded by Pune, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Surat, Navi Mumbai, Coimbatore, and Vadodra. Shimla was rated first in the group of cities with a population of less than a million people, according to the index published by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
In the ‘less than million people’ group, the New Delhi Municipal Council topped the ‘Municipal Performance Index’ ranking. In the million-plus population group, Indore was named first on the ‘Municipal Performance Index’ list. Tirupati, Gandhinagar, Karnal, Salem, Tiruppur, Bilaspur, Udaipur, Jhansi, and Tirunelveli were next.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocating the ease of living as a core policy agenda, city rankings have become increasingly important in influencing government policies and deciding spending priorities. In the year 2020, a total of 111 cities took part in the evaluation process.
Governance, identity and culture, education, health, safety and protection, economy, affordable housing, land use planning, public open spaces, transportation and mobility, guaranteed water supply, waste-water collection, solid waste management, electricity, and environmental quality are among the 15 assessment metrics used by the Ease of Living Index.
