The highest demand for power in Delhi was 7,000 MW on Thursday, the highest in the past two years, even as power officials stated that demand could reach 7,400 MW if the city continues ongoing heatwell.
On Thursday at 15:30, the peak power demand in Delhi hit 7 026 MW, according to the website of the power department. This year, on Wednesday, this has exceeded the previous high of 6,921MW.
The peak power demand in Delhi was recorded last year on 29 June at 6,314 MW. The height of 7,409 MW on 2 July 2019 was less than the previous one. In 2018 the highest demand on 10 July was 7,016MW.
“Delhi’s peak power demand recorded last year (6314 MW) was lower because of the nationwide lockdown. Moreover, in June 2020, Delhi’s peak power demand crossed 6,000 MW only on one day that month. This year, however, Delhi’s peak power demand is expected to be in the range of 7,000 MW to 7,400 MW, though the estimates were around 7,900 MW,” said a power department official.
BSES has argued that it has successfully achieved the high-power demand of 2933 MW and 1598 MW respectively in its areas, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL).
On Thursday afternoon with no network constraint and power outage, the TPDDL spokesman said the peak power demand was reached at 2039 MW, the highest this season.
