On Sunday, the monsoon is expected to arrive in northwest India, including the nation’s capital Delhi. The usual date for the monsoon to arrive in Delhi is June 29, but it has been postponed, resulting in an extended period of high heat and humidity across the region.
On Friday, some pre-monsoon showers were forecast for Delhi, but they did not materialise. The southwest monsoon will take “another 24 hours” to reach the national capital, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The southwest monsoon is expected to cover parts of Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab, according to the IMD forecast. It will worsen between July 11 and 13, according to the IMD bulletin.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was 39.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees higher than normal. At 5.30 p.m., the relative humidity was 47 percent.
The hot weather also caused a lot of discomfort in Haryana and Punjab. The maximum temperature in Narnaul, Haryana, was 41.2 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. The maximum temperature in Hisar was 41 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperatures in Rohtak, Gurgaon, and Bhiwani (all in Haryana) were 40.1 degrees Celsius, 40.7 degrees Celsius, and 40.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Patiala in Punjab recorded maximum temperatures of 36.5, 37.1, and 38 degrees Celsius, respectively. Amritsar got 16 millimetres of rain.
In the last 15 years, the monsoon in Delhi has been the most delayed. The monsoon had reached the capital on July 7 in 2012 and July 9 in 2006, according to Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD’s regional forecasting centre.
After a 10-day hiatus, the monsoon has returned to Madhya Pradesh, bringing light showers to the state and providing some relief from the sweltering weather.
According to PK Saha, a senior meteorologist at the IMD Bhopal office, the state is expected to receive good rainfall between July 11 and 16.
In Kerala’s Kannur and Kasaragod districts, which have been receiving a lot of rain, a red alert has been issued for extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday.
