On Wednesday, August 25, the auctioning for 12 liquor retail zones in the national capital Delhi will begin. According to the Hindustan Times, the Delhi government has issued new tenders for the auctioning of these zones’ licences. The auction will end on September 2nd.
The Delhi government hopes to double its excise revenue in the first few months of the new liberalised liquor policy by collecting a record 10,000 crore. Notably, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has already made a profit of Rs 5,300 crore from the alcohol licence auctions held on August 5 and 6 for 20 of the city’s 32 liquor retail zones.
The auctioning of the 12 remaining liquor zones was delayed due to the disqualification of bidders on technical grounds at the last minute, forcing the Delhi government to issue new tenders. Condition of anonymity, the government hopes to raise around 3,180 crore from the auctioning of these 12 remaining liquor retail zones with the new round of bidding. The aforementioned amount does not include another 650 crore in excise duty, import fees, value-added tax, and other licence fees that the government expects to earn, according to the official, who added that another 900 to 1,000 crore is expected to come from the lic.
