After locals objected to the bodies of Covid victims being cremated at traditional crematoriums in Almora, a new cremation ground has been established near government land in open forest areas in Uttarakhand.
In Uttarakhand, up to 92 percent of Covid positive patients are held in home isolation.
For every 1.2 lakh people in the province, there is only one Covid hospital. In Uttarakhand, the fatality rate is currently 1.73 percent.
Almora has had 40 deaths in the last week. The cremations, on the other hand, are carried out alone by patients and they do not get any assistance from the authorities.
India Today Journalist Aishwariya Paliwal wrote on the micro blogging site Twitter
“What should someone do when the Covid becomes a stigma and there is no place in the crematorium? Rasta remains the same, to perform the last rites in the jungles. In the hilly state of Uttarakhand, relatives are cremating the bodies of dead bodies in the mountains without the help of the authorities or the government.”
Munna Lal, 35, has had a nightmare for the past ten days. His father had a fever and could only get him to the hospital after nine days of serious sickness —- which was miles away from his home. His entire family has been infected with the infection. Worse, Lal learned that his father had died only 24 hours after his admission.
Munna Lal was seen cremating the body on his own without any help from the authorities when India Today TV talked to him.
