According to data released on Thursday by the Union Health Ministry, India witnessed the largest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases this year, with 72,330 new infections registered in just 24 hours, increasing the total number of cases to 1,22,21,665.
According to Health Ministry data revised at 8 a.m., the single-day rise in cases is the largest since October 11, 2020, while the death toll rose to 1,62,927, with 459 daily new casualties, the highest in about 116 days.
The active cases have risen for the 22nd day in a row to 5,84,055, accounting for 4.78 percent of total infections, while the recovery rate has fallen to 93.89 percent, according to the report.
On October 11, 2020, 74,383 new infections were reported in a 24-hour period. On February 12, the active caseload was at its lowest point, at 1, 35,926 cases, accounting for 1.25 percent of all infections.
The number of patients who have recovered from the illness has risen to 1,14,74,683 people. According to the results, the case fatality rate has fallen to 1.33 percent.
On August 7, India’s COVID-19 tally surpassed 20 lakh, followed by 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, and 50 lakh on September 16. It passed the 60 lakh mark on September 28, the 70 lakh mark on October 11, the 80 lakh mark on October 29, the 90 lakh mark on November 20, and the one-crore mark on December 19.
Up to March 31, the ICMR said 24,47,98,621 samples had been screened, with 11,25,681 samples being tested on Wednesday. 227 people were killed in Maharashtra, 55 in Punjab, 39 in Chhattisgarh, 26 in Karnataka, 19 in Tamil Nadu, 15 in Kerala, and 11 in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
So far, the country has recorded 1,62,927 deaths, with 54,649 deaths in Maharashtra, 12,719 in Tamil Nadu, 12,567 in Karnataka, 11,027 in Delhi, 10,329 in West Bengal, 8,811 in Uttar Pradesh, 7,217 in Andhra Pradesh, and 6,868 in Punjab.
