MP PCC chief Kamal Nath was upbeat over the Congress performance in the civic polls by winning mayor posts in five municipal corporations out of 16 in the state.
Nath accused BJP of using ‘police, paise aur prashasan’ (police, money and administration) to influence the civic polls this time.
The Congress in 1999 and 2004 won mayor posts in two municipal corporations, in 2009 won in three seats and in 2015 won no seat while BJP won 16 seats, he was addressing a press conference.
Presently the BJP lost seven seats of mayor while won nine seats of which on two seats the winning margin was around 500 votes raise questions, he claimed.
Nath said money can buy anyone but money can’t buy ones heart, mind or soul.
He said ‘paise se kisiko kharid sakte hai par dil dimag aur atma ko nahi kharid sakte’.
Adding, he hit out at BJP saying the people who were influenced or approached with money (for favour) in civic body polls might retaliate in the elections (general legislative assembly elections) due next year (2023) — ‘agle sal chunave hoga jinko kharida hai jinko kharidne ka prayas kiya hai woh badla lenge’.
About the Congress fielded 3 MLAs on mayor post they were defeated for the people did not accept, Nath said ‘it is not a question of being not accepted (by the people), the question is in each district the politics differ so the party strategy and it is not possible to generalize it.
