On June 15, 2001, Aamir Khan’s film Lagaan was released on the big screen for the first time. The story centered around the members of a tiny village who was not only plagued by years of drought but also by heavy taxes in the pre-Independence era.
When asked about the critically praised movie, Aamir admitted that he understood it would be a difficult task because it was so unique. He even revealed that Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar, two of his close pals, had cautioned him.
When a British army officer challenges them to a game of cricket, everyone leaps at the chance to win the game and get their taxes lifted.
Many people still adore and rewatch the film 20 years later. Aamir talked spoke about how sad he was when he didn’t win an Oscar, but that the affection for the picture was his ultimate prize.
According to reports, he said, “I’m frequently asked, “How sad were you that you didn’t win the Oscar?” Naturally, I was dissatisfied. I had hoped to be the winner. Many people have asked me if the songs and duration of the movie bothered the Academy members. The fact that the film was nominated and placed in the top five indicates that it was well-liked by the members. Being nominated is a difficult task.”
Lagaan was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002 but did not win. Aamir Khan, the film’s lead star, recently told out about how he felt when Lagaan didn’t win an Oscar. On the 20th anniversary of Lagaan, Aamir Khan also said that he “struggled with his diction” in the film and that he “actually learned his lines the day before the sequence was to be shot.”
Set in the pre-independence era, Lagaan tells the story of a small village whose residents challenge British Army soldiers to a game of cricket to avoid paying hefty taxes. All the set was filmed in Gujrat. Gracy Singh, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Rajendra Gupta, Raghubir Yadav, Rajesh Vivek, Pradeep Rawat, and Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne, among others, starred in Lagaan.
