In National Education Policy (NEP), the Education Ministry called for a common entrance exam, which it is now actively encouraging. The common admission exam, like the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Exam, will be a single paper (JEE).
It will be for entrance to non-technical undergraduate programs. For the academic year 2021-22, the Centre is considering holding a centralized single entrance examination for admission to multiple universities.
This is expected to take place throughout July and August. All central universities, including Delhi University, Aligarh Muslim University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, will use the results of the universal admission test to accept new students.
The Education Ministry has previously stated that the universal entrance test for institutions would be launched in May 2021.
The second wave of the epidemic, however, had thrown these plans into turmoil. According to sources, if students in Class 12 are awarded grades instead of marks, admission to universities will be purely based on success in entrance exams.
“The concept for holding uniform entrance tests for all universities was put on hold owing to the epidemic,” said another ministry official, “but it will be considered again with the universities.” The Education Ministry is “positively considering” holding the common admission test in the next two months, the website stated, citing sources, now that the CBSE Class 12 tests have been cancelled and the COVID-19 cases have been dropped.
“There is a recommendation that students whose Class 12 examinations have been cancelled should be assigned grades instead of marks,” a ministry official told the news website. “It is vital that university admissions also proceed differently.”
“In the July-August period, the ministry is considering holding common entrance tests for students across the country,” they added.
