The rescuers are looking for survivors in Mumbai following the collapse of a residential facility. Eleven dead bodies were recovered and seven others injured.

The incident happened Wednesday at 11pm, and according to Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the collapse enclosed a close residential building. The municipal authorities also said that residents were evacuated from three nearby buildings since structures were in a poor state.

“15 people including women and children have been rescued and are shifted to the hospital. There is a possibility of more people stuck under the debris. Teams are present here to rescue people,” Vishal Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 11, Mumbai as saying.

Minister Aslam Shaikh of the Maharashtra, who reached the site of the incident, said the collapse was caused by the rain. He added that the injured had been transferred to the BDBA hospital.

On Wednesday, heavy rain fell on Mumbai and his suburbs, causing inundations on roads and railways, as the south-west mousson arrived in the town and disrupted suburban train service.

Mumbai was warned of very high to very heavy precipitation in isolated places by the India Meteorologic Department (IMD) and neighbouring districts of Than, Palghar and Raigad.

The flood caused by the first rain of the monsoon season prompted the police to shut down four undergrounds and forced motoring operators to abandon cars on the roads.
