As India fights the second wave of coronavirus, several states have decided to expand their lockdowns in order to break the chain of transmission. Both Karnataka and Kerala declared on May 21 that they would extend their ongoing lockdowns due to high COVID-19 cases in their respective states
Karnataka Chief Minister, BS Yediyurappa after a meeting with officials and ministers stated, “We had a meeting with senior officials and ministers. We have taken a decision on lockdown. We had strict restrictions till May 24. As per the opinion of experts, we are extending the strict restrictions till June 7 at 6 am.” There will be no changes in the restrictions, however, police officials can take strict action against lockdown violators.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also declared that the state of emergency will be extended until May 30. The Kerala government, on the other hand, has agreed to relax the “triple lockout” regulations in three districts. Only in Malappuram will the strict restrictions be maintained, according to Vijayan.
The following states have also prolonged their lockdown:
- Delhi: Delhi’s lockdown has been extended until 5 a.m. on May 24. Plumbing and electrical utilities, for example, will continue to operate normally. The Delhi metro, on the other hand, will remain closed.
- Maharashtra: The state’s lockdown has been extended until 7 a.m. on June 1. The new restrictions include a mandatory negative RT-PCR test report for those entering the state, as well as restrictions on those coming from “sensitive backgrounds.” It should be noted that Maharashtra has seen a significant reduction in their daily caseload, with the capital city of Mumbai registering less than 5,000 cases in the last few days.
- Uttar Pradesh: The Yogi Adityanath government, which had placed a curfew across the state until May 10 to prevent the spread of the virus, has extended it until 7 a.m. on May 24. This was the fifth such extension in as many days.
- Jharkhand: Jharkhand will be partially shut down until May 27. Inter-state and intra-state bus movement has been banned, whereas private vehicles can only travel with e-passes provided by the district administration.
- Haryana: Haryana is still under lockdown with tight restrictions until May 24.
- J&K: The administration had imposed a week-long curfew in all 20 districts. The curfew, which has been in effect since April 29, will now be in effect until May 24.
- Chhattisgarh: To curb the influx of COVID-19 incidents, the Chhattisgarh government has requested district administrators to extend the lockdown until May 31.
