The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared today that its coronavirus vaccination centres will be closed tomorrow, and that the information for Monday will be shared on Twitter on Sunday.
“Dear Mumbaikars. There will be no vaccination at any of the centres tomorrow. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday. The details for Monday will be shared tomorrow by this handle & the respective wards too,” the civic body tweeted.
Vaccination centres in Pune were also closed today due to a shortage of doses, according to the city’s mayor, Murlidhar Mohol.
Due to a shortage of vaccine stock, vaccination will not be available on May 22 at all vaccination centres in the Pune Municipal Corporation district, he tweeted this morning in Marathi.
Delhi will also briefly suspend vaccinations for the 18-44 age group beginning Monday due to a shortage of vaccines, according to Aam Aadmi Party MLA Atishi.
However, a top BMC official explained that the vaccination ban in Mumbai is not due to a vaccine shortage. “It’s because it’s Sunday,” Suresh Kakani, the civic body’s additional commissioner, explained.
Due to a lack of doses in the province, Maharashtra announced last week that it is “slowing down” the Covid vaccination process for those aged 18 to 44 in order to concentrate on those aged 45 and up. The vaccination operation, however, will not be stopped, according to state Health Minister Rajesh Tope.
The state had previously stated that it was exploring the idea of specifically importing vaccines for use by Mumbai residents.
Mumbai’s Covid tally reached 6,96,379 after 1,299 people were detected with the infection on Saturday. The city saw 52 deaths taking the death count to 14,574, an official said adding that 1,827 people were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours.
