The Bharatiya Janata Party retained posts of mayors in seven municipal corporations while losing in Chhindwara, Jabalpur, Gwalior and Singrauli to opposition Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The AAP make its debut by winning mayor post in Singrauli municipal corporation. In last term of the civic body the mayor post was with BJP.
The elections for the local bodies including municipal corporation, nagar palika parishad and nagar parishad polls was held in phases and the counting of votes was held on Sunday.
In Jablapur the Congress won the post of mayor after gap of 18 years. Jagat Bahadur Singh ‘Annu’ of Congress won the mayoral election. Singh defeated BJP candidate Dr. Jitendra Jamdar by margin of over 44330 votes.
The Congress won the mayor’s post in Gwalior after gap of 50 years, Congress candidate Shobha Sikarwar defeated BJP candidate Suman Sharma by a margin of over 28,800 votes.
The Congress won mayor’s post in Chhindwara for first time.
In Bhopal BJP candidate Malti Rai won Mayor’s election by a margin of over 98,840 votes by defeating Vibha Patel of Congress.
The BJP has won Indore civic body with the party nominee and former additional advocate general Pushya Mirta Bhargava defeating Congress MLA Sanjay Shukla by a margin of 1,33,176 votes.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the BJP had performed well in municipal corporation polls and has won over 80 per cent of seats in the nagar palika parishad and nagar parishad elections.
He said in 36 nagar palikas, the BJP has won 27 while Congress four and rest independent.
MP Congress chief and ex-CM Kamal Nath said the Congress have won three mayoral elections in Chhindwara, Jabalpur and Gwalior. The Congress thanks the voters for their support to the party. A large number of our candidates have won on corporators posts also. The Congress won mayor post of Gwalior municipal corporation after 50 years, he added.
