Barrackpore, West Bengal: BJP Barrackpore candidate Arjun Singh on Monday said he was attacked by ‘TMC goons’.
BJP candidate from Barrackpore Arjun Singh on Monday told news agency ANI that he sustained injuries after being allegedly attacked by supporters of Trinamool Congress nearby a village.
“I was attacked by TMC goons while I was trying to talk with voters. It was a planned attack and I will report the matter to the Election Commission. TMC’s hooligans are running unchecked in the state, my bleeding mouth is a proof of it,” Singh said talking to reporters.
In the viral video where flashed by media agencies, Singh can be seen running to chase TMC goons. Another video shows the Barrackpore candidate fell down as he increased his pace.
Slamming the ruling TMC in West Bengal, Singh said he was attacked by TMC goons who have been brought from outside. “Those people were scaring away our voters. I am injured,” he said.
Post whatever happened in Barrackpore, the BJP is now demanding for re-elections in the entire constituency.
In a press conference on the same day in afternoon, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar at the BJP headquarters said:
“We demand re-election in the Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency because the polls have been rigged there. The election is not taking place in a fair manner. Polling officials and voters are being threatened and central forces are not being allowed to discharge their duty,” said Prakash Javadekar.
He said, “West Bengal has witnessed large-scale violence in all the phases of the elections till now. In the last phase (on April 29), Union Minister Babul Supriyo was attacked and his car damaged. Today our Barrackpore candidate Arjun Singh has been thrashed by TMC goons,” Javadekar added.
A voting glitch was also reported from Barrackpore’s polling booth.
“There was some problem with the EVM which we tried to solve but it took longer than usual. The machines do not need to be changed as the problems have now been sorted, voting will resume in a few minutes,” said Mahto talking to ANI.
A voting glitch was also reported from booths in West Bengal’s Howrah, reportedly after glitches in EVMs and VVPATs.
Polling has already been held in 18 seats of the state in the past four phases.
