After dramatic scenes in the state assembly on Tuesday during the opposition’s protest against a bill that gives the police more authority, Tejashwi Yadav, Bihar’s opposition leader, slammed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his government.
He said Mr. Kumar was “thrashed inside the House by unarmed MLAs of his party.” He posted pictures of one of his MLAs being taken from the assembly on a stretcher after being reportedly manhandled by “police and local goons” during the rally.
My revolutionary colleague Satish Das, who comes from a poor background, was a survivor of Nitish Kumar’s hooliganism. He was hit in the head. In Hindi, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief tweeted, “The photo is evidence.”
Women security forces also took female MLAs out of the assembly house.
Rabri Devi, Mr. Yadav’s mum, tweeted a video of a female MLA being dragged by female security personnel. “The sparks you’ve lit today will burn the black government to ashes tomorrow.” She tweeted in Hindi, “Bihar will measure and that too, fast.”
The opposition Grand Alliance, which includes the RJD, the Congress, and the Left, demonstrated against the Bihar Special Armed Police Bill, 2021, calling for its repeal. On Tuesday, the assembly was adjourned five times.
“Draconian Act, which would grant police full powers so that they can act as a veritable arm of Nitish’s dictatorial politics,” Mr. Yadav tweeted today, posting a video of anarchy from within the assembly.
They will not allow the assembly speaker to leave his chamber.
Mr. Yadav was also briefly arrested while taking part in a march against the “black constitution,” among other things.
In a tweet, the RJD said, “The police are thrashing Opposition leaders inside the assembly doors. Elections were won by the rigging of the police administration and Hitler’s rule is also going on in the same fashion! Democracy is over! People outside the House and the Opposition inside are being ruled over by Hooliganism.”
Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has also slammed the incident. Sharing a video of an RJD MLA being thrashed by the police, Priyanka Chaturvedi condemned the violence.
“What is happening in Bihar? Elected representatives from the opposition being treated like this in the Vidhan Sabha is highly condemnable and unacceptable,” she said.
