According to the National Center for Seismology, earthquakes struck three northeastern Indian states early Friday: Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya (NCS). According to NCS, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 was recorded in Assam’s Sonitpur district, and earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.0 and 2.6 were recorded in Manipur’s Chandel and West Khasi Hills in Meghalaya, respectively.
The NCS tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.1, Occurred on 18-06-2021, 02:04:40 IST, Lat: 26.73 & Long: 92.44, Depth: 22 Km, Location: 36km WNW of Tezpur, Assam,” describing the quake as “strong.”
This is the second earthquake in three days to strike Tezpur, Sonitpur district. Tezpur experienced a magnitude 3.0 earthquake on Tuesday night. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometres around 10.53 p.m., with the epicentre 60 kilometres west of Tezpur.
With a depth of 10 kilometres, the earthquake in Manipur’s Chandel area has been classified as “Rather Strong.” NCS wrote on the microblogging site, “Earthquake of Magnitude:3.0, Occurred on 18-06-2021, 01:06:08 IST, Lat: 24.30 & Long: 94.10, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 39km ESE of Moirang, Manipur.”
On May 23, the state was struck by a magnitude 4.3 earthquake in Ukhrul, which occurred at a depth of 109 kilometres.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) released guidelines on how to stay safe during a natural disaster on Friday. People should avoid furniture, windows, and lamps if they are indoors. If they are outside, people should avoid buildings, walls, and polling stations. If they are in an open area, however, they should stay there until the shaking stops, then move away from buildings, exterior walls, and heavy objects.
