On Wednesday, Army Chief Gen MM Naravane began a two-day tour to Kashmir, during which he was briefed by formation commanders on the situation on the Line of Control in the context of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
The army chief highlighted the measures being taken to discourage local kids from joining militancy and evaluated the overall security situation in the UT.
The army chief arrived in Srinagar on Wednesday morning, accompanied by Lt Gen YK Joshi, the Northern Army commander, and Lt Gen DP Pandey, the Chinar Corps commander, according to an army official.
“The army chief visited units and formations in the hinterland where he was briefed by the local commanders on the existing security situation and measures being taken to identify and target the overground workers’ network involved in radicalisation and recruitment of youth into terrorist ranks,” the spokesman said.
“The chief reinforced the need to be prepared to meet emerging security challenges effectively. Later, he was briefed by the Chinar Corps Commander on the overall situation pertaining to the LoC and the hinterland,” the spokesman said.
According to him, the chief was updated on measures to prevent local recruiting and enable local terrorist surrender.
The army chief praised the cooperation shown by all levels of the civil administration, the J&K Police, the Central Armed Police Forces, and other security agencies in implementing a “whole of government” approach that has improved the security situation in the UT and paved the way for a new era of development.
The army commander met with L-G Manoj Sinha at Raj Bhawan in the evening to address new issues and a road map for long-term peace in J&K.
