Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for his role in The Father over the late Chadwick Boseman, who died last year of cancer and has dominated awards season so far for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, in a dazzling close to a largely predictable Oscar ceremony. At the 93rd Academy Awards, Chloe Zhao became the first woman of color to win Best Director for Nomadland, which also won Best Picture.
She is also just the second woman in Oscar history, after The Hurt Locker owner Kathryn Bigelow. Frances McDormand, the star of Nomadland, secured her seventh Best Actress Oscar, matching Daniel Day-Lewis’ three. Youn Yuh-Jung, Best Supporting Actress for Minari, joined Chloe Zhao in making history. Daniel Kaluuya won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Judas And The Black Messiah this year, completing his awards slam.
The first Oscar of the evening went to Emerald Fennell, who won Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman; The Father won Best Adapted Screenplay. This category was nominated for The White Tiger, starring Priyanka Chopra.
Denmark’s Another Round was named Best International Feature Film. “We wanted to create a film that honors life,” said director Thomas Vinterberg, who made the film while dealing with a horrific personal loss: his daughter, who was cast in Another Round, was killed in a car accident. This year’s official entry from India, Jallikattu, did not make the shortlist.
Mank, which dominated the winners with ten nominations, took home two Oscars: Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. Sound Of Metal, starring Pakistani-origin actor Riz Ahmed, also earned two nominations for Best Sound and Best Film Editing. Priyanka Chopra and husband Nick Jonas revealed the nominees last month.
This year’s Oscars were historic on many levels: for one, it boasted the most diverse roster of winners in Academy Award history; for another, in comparison to the usual location of Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre, much of the ceremony was held at Union Station. This year, the Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing awards have been combined into a single Best Sound category. For the third year in a row, there will be no host for the award ceremony.
