Popular Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty entered the BJP in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Sunday. The change comes just weeks before West Bengal’s Assembly elections, which are set to begin on March 27. There were rumors that Mithun would enter the saffron camp to help the party improve its reputation in the province.
“It is a dream that has come true for me today,” Chakraborty said at the rally. I grew up in a small neighbourhood in North Kolkata called Jorabagan and dreamed of being something large, but I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to share a stage with the country’s most powerful politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
After joining BJP on Sunday in Bengal, the actor said that the reason behind his decision was his lifelong dream of helping the needy, adding that he was sure that the party would win the elections in the state.
Talking to reporters after entering the group at today’s mega rally, the actor said that only one party is supporting the needy, and if he wishes to fulfil his dream, he has to take someone’s hand.
“I am a Bengali, and I believe that everyone who has grown up here has a right to this land,” Chakraborty said, subtly criticising the Trinamool Congress for calling the BJP “outsiders.” I pledge to stand up and fight for the interests of all West Bengal residents.”
“I am not ‘Jol Dhora,’ I am not ‘Bele Bora,’ I am a pure cobra,” he said, referring to himself as a “cobra.” You’ll be done with a single bite. Remember the latest slogan now.
BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya had met Chakraborty at the former’s residence in Belgachia on Saturday. “I have spoken with him (Mithun) and he’s going to come today. I will be able to make a comment only after a detailed discussion with him,” Vijayvargiya said.
Mithun Chakraborty left the Trinamool Congress after being called in the Saradha chit fund case just two years after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. The Enforcement Directorate asked him about the 1.2 crores he got from the Saradha group as compensation for being a brand ambassador for a TV news channel that was funded by the Saradha group.
