The Urban Administration Department is carrying out the work of solid waste management in a systematic manner through the local bodies in order to maintain clean environment in the cities of the state.
A grant amount is also being provided to the local bodies on the basis of population and on the basis of rates fixed by the state government for proper garbage collection, transportation, processing and proper disposal facilities in urban bodies.
Under this system, it is mandatory for the concerned body to make its own contribution.
According to Solid Waste Management Rules, management of waste generated in urban areas is the responsibility of urban bodies.
Last year 7 thousand tons of waste was processed
Emission of 7 thousand tonnes of waste was reported in 413 urban bodies of the state in the year 2023 out of which 6.63 thousand tonnes of waste was disposed and processed by the civic bodies through legal means.
This constitutes 98 percent of the waste generated.
At present, work is in progress on two processes for solid waste in the state.
The first process is the implementation of cluster based projects, in which garbage from other nearby bodies is being brought to the central body and processed properly.
At present, 60 urban bodies have been included in 5 clusters in the state using this method.
These clusters are Sagar, Rewa, Katni, Jabalpur, and Singrauli. Of these, compost is being made from wet waste from Sagar, Katni and Singrauli clusters.
Electricity is being generated from the waste collected daily in Rewa and Jabalpur.
In the second process of solid waste, the urban bodies themselves are processing the waste generated daily.
At present, compost is being produced by processing wet waste through composting method in 368 centralized units in 401 urban bodies.
Along with this, 360 material recovery facility units have been established.
A unit with a processing capacity of 550 tonnes per day wet waste has been set up in Indore through which Bio CNG is being manufactured.
Similarly, a unit of 150 tonne per day capacity has also been proposed to be developed in Bhopal.
A 600 ton per day capacity waste to energy unit has been set up in Jabalpur, which will generate 11.05 MW electricity.
Similarly, Waste to Energy unit is also under construction in Rewa.
