The tribal dominated Mandla district is first fully literate district in Madhya Pradesh was possible due to Mahila Gyanalay program and Freedom from Illiteracy campaign carried for successive two years.
Mandla District Collector Harshika Singh said the twin initiatives were focused on women literacy and to achieve total literacy in the district.
As a result of these initiatives, Mandla district is first fully functional literate district.
On August 2020, Mahila Gyanalaya program was started by the Department of Women and Child Development to make women literate, in which assistance from the educated women of the village skilled about alphabets, counting and general banking behavior to the illiterate women around them.
While under adult literacy, the freedom from illiteracy campaign was started in coordination with the Rajya Shiksha Kendra and the School Education Department.
Under this campaign, cooperation of Akshar Saathis (literate persons) and social workers who volunteer knowledge were taken in loop as a result Mandla district become fully functional literate district, she informed.
This is a unique and successful experiment of social change in the district, she said.
With contribution of all the initiatives were executed at places where work under MGNREGA was going, in the night classes and morning classes and door-to-door visits were conducted.
