Governor of Uttarakhand Baby Rani Maurya resigned on Wednesday, citing personal reasons. According to BK Sant, the governor secretary, Maurya presented her resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind.
Maurya resigned two years before her term ended, sparking anticipation that she might return to politics in Uttar Pradesh, where the state’s critical Assembly election is set to take place next year.
She met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday.
Maurya, a BJP politician from the Dalit caste, ran unsuccessfully for the Assembly seat of Etmadpur in 2007, after which she became less active in political circles.
On August 26, 2018, she was sworn in as the governor of Uttarakhand, succeeding Krishna Kant Paul, who was stepping down after a five-year term.
Last month marked the end of her three-year term as governor.
