Monsoon Parliament session will begin on Monday, with the government preparing a large legislative agenda for the opposition to corner the Centre, including on allegations of maladministration of the Covid-19 pandemic and farmers’ turmoil.
The Vice-President of the House and Chairman of Rajya Sabha M. Venkaiah Naidu met in the House on Saturday to discuss the agenda for this year’s Monsoon. In a productive sitting Naidu appealed.
Union minister of parliamentary affairs Prahlad Joshi said during the meeting that the Centre has identified 29 bills for the session, including six ordinances replacing bills and two items of financial business.
On August 13, the monsoon session of Parliament 2021 will come to an end.
PM Modi has called for a ‘health discussion.’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an all-party meeting on Sunday, telling the leaders that the government is ready for a “healthy and meaningful debate” in Parliament on a variety of issues.
According to an official statement, the Prime Minister told the floor leaders that issues concerning the people should be raised amicably and that the government should be allowed to respond to these discussions, in keeping with the country’s democratic traditions.
PM Modi also told members of Parliament that because people’s representatives are intimately familiar with the situation on the ground, their participation in these discussions adds value to the decision-making process.
The opposition’s plan to corner the government
On Sunday, opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge stated that they have proposed discussing various issues such as inflation, poverty, and the Covid-19 crisis in the house in front of Venkaiah Naidu. Venakaih Naidu has also expressed interest in discussing the issues, according to Kharge.
Several opposition parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Communist Party of India (CPI), are planning to move adjournment notices in both houses of Parliament on Monday over farmers’ issues, according to Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) leader NK Premachandran.
