Authorities said at least 11 people were killed and two others were injured in Mumbai’s Chembur area as a result of landslides caused by heavy rains that lashed the city and its suburbs on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
“About 4-5 houses affected. 10 dead bodies have been retrieved by Local BMC/ Fire brigade personnel before NDRF reached and 01 dead body of female has been retrieved by NDRF team,” the National Disaster Response Force said in a statement.
“Further 6 to 8 persons are feared to be trapped. NDRF team under command Inspector Rahul is at the incident site and search and rescue operation is going on,” NDRF added.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) disaster management cell, the accident occurred around 6.30 a.m. when a house’s retaining wall collapsed due to a tree fall.
In a separate incident, three people were killed and two were injured after four to five houses collapsed in the Vikhroli area due to heavy rain overnight. Around 2.40 a.m., the accident was reported.
The city reported heavy rain overnight, particularly between 12 and 2 a.m. Waterlogging has been reported in several cities, including Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Andheri, Chembur, Kurla, Gandhi Market, Hindmata, and others.
According to the BMC, the island city received 156 mm of rain, with the eastern suburbs receiving 143 mm of heavy rain and the western suburbs receiving 125 mm of rain between 8 p.m. on Saturday and 2 a.m. on Sunday.
