Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked the Election Commission (EC) to take action against Kamal Hassan after his controversial remark on Mahatma Gandhi assassin, Nathuram Godse.
Addressing a public rally in Aravakurichi assembly constituency on Sunday, actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief said:
“Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, a ‘Hindu’ is independent India’s first terrorist.”
The Aravakurichi constituency where Hassan was campaigning for Lok Sabha elections is a Muslim dominated area.
The BJP has asked the EC to treat the speech as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. “Hassan was trying to create a rift among two groups in the name of religion,” BJP said to EC.
“Actor Kamal Haasan recalling Gandhi’s assassination now and calling it Hindu terrorism is condemnable. Standing amidst minorities in TN byelection campaign, he is lighting a dangerous fire to gain votes by minority appeasement,” president of Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit Tamilisai Soundararajan? tweeted on Monday.
“Uttering nonsense in a sensitive subject violating the poll code of conduct. Let us hope for EC to handle with all sense as per law of the land against hate speech,” Soundararajan added.
Mocking MNM chief Hassan, Soundararajan reminding him of his acting days said, remember when ‘Vishwaroopam’ was not allowed to release. “Now he calls himself true Indian! True political acting started now having lost the chances in screenplay,” she added.
Vivek Oberoi, who is starring as Narendra Modi in Prime Minister Modi’s biopic, took to Twitter to give a befitting reply.
“Dear Kamal sir, you are a great artist. Just like art has no religion, terror has no religion either! You can say Ghodse was a terrorist, why would you specify ‘Hindu’ ? Is it because you were in a Muslim dominated area looking for votes? @ikamalhaasan”
‘PM Narendra Modi’ is set release a day after general elections results will be announced (May 24).
