A huge landslide in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur region killed nine visitors and wounded three others on Sunday, according to ANI. Boulders snapped off a mountain and came crashing down, killing nine tourists and injuring three others.
“Batseri bridge collapsed in the incident,” said Saju Ram Rana, superintendent of police in Kinnaur district. “A rescue team is present at the spot.”
According to India Today, eight visitors died on the scene and another died on the way to the hospital.
Large pieces of granite falling down the Sangla Valley were seen on social media. Following that, a piece of the bridge collapses and falls into a river.
The deaths were mourned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur. “All arrangements are being made for the treatment of those injured in the accident,” the Prime Minister’s Office tweeted. “I wish them a speedy recovery.”
According to ANI, Thakur announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who died in the Kinnaur disaster. “Treatment of the injured will be taken care of by the government,” he added.
Modi also announced an assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who died. Rs 50,000 will be given to those injured, he added.
