Somya, a resident of Sector 12 in Sonepat, is the first woman from Haryana and third from the country to be commissioned as an Assistant Commandant in the BSF.
Somya was given the “Sword of Honour”, on February 7, for being the best trainee during her passing-out parade at Tekanpur, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
Kuldeep Singh, her father who is a principal at Government Senior Secondary School in Bhigan village, said after completing her BTech from the DCR University of Science and Technology, Murthal, Somya appeared in the UPSC examination and got second position. She chose to join the BSF.
Her mother, a teacher in a reputed private school here, said Somya was very keen on joining military or paramilitary services. “We are proud of her,” she said.
Somya, who is at home for some days after passing out, said she was motivated by the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Panipat in 2015.
“Girls are capable of doing anything and they should work hard to achieve their goals,” she said.
